Reporter’s Uplifting Message To Head Coach Liam Coen After Jaguars Loss Ignites Debate Over Press Conference Conduct
Should reporters give uplifting messages during press conferences, or does it cross a line?
After the Jacksonville #Jaguars’ 27–24 loss to the #BuffaloBills in the NFL wild-card round, a reporter’s comment to head coach Liam Coen sparked a lively debate on social media.
During the postgame press conference, Jacksonville Free Press associate editor Lynn Jones-Turpin told Coen, “Congratulations on your success, young man. You hold your head up. You guys have had a most magnificent season. You did a great job out there today”, then added encouragement to “keep it going… We got another season.” The clip of her remarks, which lasted about 19 seconds, quickly circulated online.
Reactions from fellow journalists and fans were mixed: some criticized the display of overt support during what they viewed as a professional questioning opportunity, while others defended the gesture as a positive and respectful message following a tough playoff exit.
