Grammy-winning singer #MuniLong revealed in a candid interview on Good Morning America Tuesday (June 23) that she underwent a double lung transplant after a harrowing health crisis stemming from a pneumonia diagnosis.

The ordeal began while she was on the road for #Brandy and Monica’s co-headlining The Boy Is Mine Tour last fall. Despite suffering from #Lupus, Muni Long pushed through the North American trek — something she now says she regrets. By the time the tour hit the frigid Northeast around Thanksgiving, she could barely get out of bed to make her call times, ultimately managing only two songs at her final show before her team and family urged her to go home and rest.

Things escalated quickly after Thanksgiving when she woke up in the hospital and was told she had roughly a week to live without immediate intervention. Doctors gave her a stark choice: hospice or a double lung transplant. “My jaw dropped,” she recalled, adding that her first reaction to the blunt honesty was simply, “That’s rude.” She chose the surgery. Muni Long also underwent vocal surgery as part of her recovery, though she says she’s currently asymptomatic with no infections or complications six months out.

Now describing herself as doing “fabulous,” Muni Long marked her return to music Monday with a new single, “Richest” — her first solo release of the year, recorded prior to surgery. Her voice has since changed, and doctors have asked her to hold off on performing live for about a year. Reflecting on everything, she says her biggest regret was staying silent about her struggles for too long. “I did not speak up for myself,” she said, noting that much of her trauma came from carrying everything alone.
