EXCLUSIVE: ‘Diarra From Detroit’ Creator Wanted To Show Detroit’s ‘More Expensive Side’
“Diarra From Detroit” creator and star Diarra Kilpatrick wanted viewers to see a side of her hometown that isn’t always portrayed on television.
During an exclusive interview with #theJasmineBrand founder Jasmine Brand, Kilpatrick explained that she hoped to showcase some of Detroit’s more upscale experiences, including its boating culture.
“There’s a yacht club in Detroit,” she said, explaining that she wanted to shoot a scene on the Detroit River. “I wanted to show a more expensive side of Detroit.”
However, the realities of producing a television series ultimately got in the way. Kilpatrick revealed that the production simply didn’t have the money to pull off the scene, adding, “We couldn’t afford to get on the boat.”
The moment offered a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes decisions that shape what viewers ultimately see on “Diarra From Detroit,” as Kilpatrick balances authentically representing the city with the financial realities of producing the series.
