Kanye West’s Late Mother Dr. Donda West Honored With Street Named After Her In Chicago

#KanyeWest’s late mother, Dr. Donda West, is receiving a special honor in the city where she left her mark.

On Tuesday (Sept. 22), a portion of 78th Street in #Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood was honorarily renamed Dr. Donda West Way, with Kanye himself in attendance for the ceremony. Dr. West spent more than two decades as a professor at #ChicagoStateUniversity, where she chaired the English Department and founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. Ald. Greg Mitchell praised her impact, saying she “shaped minds and opened doors,” while Chicago State professor Dr. Garrard McClendon — who nominated her for the street honor — described her contributions to the university as “transformative.” Dr. West passed away in 2007 at age 58.
