Adele Accused Of Transphobia By Some, Singer Said She “Loves Being A Woman” At Gender Neutral Award Show

Adele stirs controversy at the annual BRIT Awards.

British vocalist Adele was labeled a rebel of sorts for her “Artist of the Year” acceptance speech at the 2022 BRIT Awards. Some viewers didn’t agree with the artist calling herself a “woman” and a “female.” Towards the end of her speech, she stated:

“I understand why the name of this award has changed, but I really love being a woman and being a female artist! I do! I do! I’m really proud of us, I really, really am!”

Although the live audience cheered Adele on, it was a different story on Twitter. Many users praised Adele for shamelessly going against the new status quo, while others took offense to it. The term TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist) was tossed around to describe the singer.

One user wrote:

“Misogyny textbook example in 2sec: Two males disapproving a woman for the way she expresses herself & for daring to say she’s proud to be a woman and a female artist. Plot twist: one of them calls himself a ‘staunch feminist’. #Adele.”

Another said:

“A man says he loves being a woman and people applaud and cheer such progression. A woman says it and people take offence. That is where we are. #Adele.”

“Hopefully anyone who had any doubt that we are in the grip of a harmful ideology will have their eyes fully opened by seeing how controversial it has become for a woman to say, ‘I love being a woman’. #adele.”

“Astonishing how a woman can go on stage, say how much she enjoys being a woman and being female and that’s enough to label her a #terf. So basically, proudly defining you’re a member of a specific sex is #transphobic? It’s utter nonsense. Congrats to #Adele though.”

“How DARE #Adele use language that is not inclusive of those who identify as women, female and artists but are none of these things? Xe should have said ‘I love being a sentient birthing unit and a vulva-carrying entertainer’ Only transwomen can say they’re ‘proud of being women’!”

“Trans women: I am a strong and powerful WOMAN. TRANS WOMEN ARE WOOOOMMMEENNN. Crowd (mostly men): yaaas queen! *claping, cheering* Woman: I’m proud to be a woman! Crowd (mostly men): transphobic b*tch! What a mess Twitter is this morning. #Adele.”

“If you’re triggered by #Adele saying she’s proud to be a female artist, YOU are the problem. SEEK HELP.”

“She’s a woman. She’s a female artist. Facts, Jacob. She’s triumphed in a male-dominated industry. She’s every right to celebrate being a successful woman. If that bothers you, then the issue is your misogyny. #Adele #brits2022.”

“Thanks Adele. I really love being a woman and being a female writer #Adele #WomenWontWheesht #GenderCritical #BRITs.”

“#Adele being proud to be a woman is considered an insult to non-binary people now.”

The BRIT Awards decided to remove “male” and “female” from its award titles in 2019 after artist Sam Smith pointed out that the use of pronouns was offensive to non-binary acts. Adele’s award was originally called “British Female Solo Artist.” 2021 was the final year pronouns were used.
