History Maker: Gabby Douglas 1st African American To Win Women’s All Around Gym Gold

Despite folk talking about her less than stellar hair, 16-year-old Gabby Douglas shined Thursday afternoon, winning the gold medal in the Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Individual All-Around final. Finishing with a score of 62.232, Gabby is now the third straight American to win gymnastics’ biggest prize, taking the lead on the first event Thursday. What’s even more dope? She’s the first African-American to win women’s all-around gym gold. Post her big win, she responded to this:
“I kind of forgot about that. Man, that’s awesome, that’s definitely an amazing feeling. I forgot about that”
Viktoria Komova of Russia took silver, while Aliya Mustafina won the bronze.
