Stylish or Inappropriate : First Lady Michelle Obama’s DNC Look

While there are a number of MORE important things that we focus on about the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, we’d like to focus on fashion. First Lady Michelle Obama’s fashion, to be specific. Tuesday evening, she took center stage in Charlotte, giving her speech (which some suggest was partially a reply to Ann Romney’s RNC address).

So what was she wearing? Her sleave-less knee-length pink dress, was by Tracy Reese. She paired the dress with a $245 pair of suede J. Crew pumps. According to tweets and press, the morning after, folk loved FLOTUS’ look, while some felt that wearing a sleeve less dress was inappropriate. What were you thoughts on her look?

Um, look at her arms… and that beautiful brown skin… she should NEVER wear sleeves. What’s “appropriate” is clearly just someone comparing our current (key word: Current) FLOTUS to former first ladies. She is a young woman, who is in amazing shape… how can she encourage the rest of us to be fit & healthy if she covers up when she addresses the nation?

Flotus is definitely stylin on you hoes. What I love most is that she does not spend thousands of dollars to look fabulous, she wears clothes that everyday women can afford. She looked amazing, and her speech was great. As I listened to her talk, it proved the age old saying behind every great man is a greater woman. The rhythm in her speech sounded just like Barack and the message was so inspiring…Just give him a little more time….

STYLISH! STYLISH! STYLISH! She has been going sleeveless from day one. She is beautiful. And who are these people who determine what is appropriate or not for the 1st lady. That is what I love about her and the President, they are normal and down to earth. They don’t allow the politically correct to shove their thinking down their throat. They have their own values that are consistent with the way the appear in public that makes you proud to know they are running the White House. 4 MORE YEARS and then some!!! VOTE PEOPLE VOTE!!!

Mrs. Obama looks very nice, but not for this event. She has very beautiful arms, but should be in a more elegant, polished look. This would have been a nice pick for a different day. To those who thinks this is an affordable outfit, you are clearly unaware of the cost of the shoes and the dress.

I am very aware, I shop at neiman marcus all the time, and thats about a $500 outfit, which is really pennies compared to what celebrities spend on clothes. I can clearly see the everyday woman spending $500 to look fabulous for an event of this magnitude.

She’s so comfortable in her own skin and it shows. I love how she wears exactly what she wants, when and when she wants. Confidence.

The year is 2012— There’s nothing wrong with, and there is such a thing as a conservative, sleeveless dress. She looked fantastic and still proper– without looking stuffy.

Going sleeveless I think is risky, but didn’t she get all kinds of flack when he won the presidency for her outfit?? I love her look from head to toe. She has not changed who she is or her style since becoming FLOTUS- and that I like about her. But I gotta admit, I feel uncomfortable going sleeveless in church, so I can see why the question is raised. But non the less, she looked fabulous!

only OUR ppl are debating whether or not her arms should be out. did you LISTEN to her speech? Sheesh! :) Also, was she suppose to shop @ the Goodwill?

THIS IS VERY APPROPRIATE AND IT SHOWS HER REAL-NESS…. AND SHE IS NOT PUTTING ON A FRONT AS IF SHE IS THIS “GRANDMA” 1ST LADY… AS LONG AS HER BOOBS ARE NOT SHOWING HER BUTT CRACK IS NOT OUT.. SHE IS DRESSED APPROPRIATELY!!!!!! HER DRESS IS OF NICE LENGTH AND HER STRAPS ARE BROAD ENOUGH ITS NOT SPAGHETTI STRAPS.. SHE IS QUIET FINE…

The First Lady looked amazing! She’s the epitome of class!

Our own people bring us down everytime. Talk about crab mentality.

  12. Mozzarella at 8:22 pm

I hate it! The fabric may be pretty but in that close up shot she looks like she’s wearing a wrestler’s onesie! And she has the arms to match!

  13. Karen at 10:00 pm

NOT appropriate!!! She needs to take some dressing etiquette classes from Dutchess (Kate).

    • Ani Dolan at 12:29 pm

      Well said, Karen!

    • AMW at 7:03 pm

Agreed. Mrs. Obama’s fashion choices will not stand the test of time. She will look silly in the history books. As a Black woman I am so disappointed. The women in my family dressed better and they all made their own clothes.

No first lady has ever worn a sleeveless dress for any important national occasion when acting as first lady. She is totally INAPPROPRIATE !! She has done this repeatedly on state occasions in foreign countries. She is an embarrassment !!!

      • Madeleine Hardt at 9:29 pm

        Amen Amen Amen

      • friend-of-all at 10:44 am

That’s not true. Jackie Kennedy wore sleeveless VERY VERY often. Her inauguration dress was sleeveless. She wore sleeveless to formal state occasions. She wore a red sleeveless dress for her official white house portrait. That was half a century ago, and no one found it inappropriate. It seems odd to get all up in arms (yes, pun) about it now. It’s like being scandalized that a woman’s ankles are showing!

  14. Wifed Up at 10:12 pm

She looked great! This woman is so inspiring. I love how she has taken the role of First Lady and made it her own. No cookie cutter, just her.

  15. Me44 at 12:14 am

She is always in appropriately dressed. There’s something called professional & she has yet to act the part. As for her shoes, they are $245. Yes, because all the fairness & little people that they Obama’s claim to be interested in usually have shoes that cost that much. They only thing these two know about giving is giving other people’s money. The two of them are the most arrogant, obnoxious, unworthy people that have ever occupied the WH. And with them it is truly an occupation & I don’t mean a job.

  16. Madeleine Hardt at 9:23 pm

She was NOT dressed properly for the occaision. That dress was for a back yard barbeque not the DNC Convention She was inappropriately dressed and in my opinion is not half the “style icon” that she is reported to be by all the sycophants.

  17. Mrs. E at 8:24 am

First Lady Michelle Obama looked amazing. Please understand, this is a new day. She is not Princess Kate, she is Michelle Obama. Everyone has their own style and IF you looked at her fashion sense you would understand this is a very APPROPRIATE choice for HER. That’s why God chose HER to be FLOTUS not YOU. Focus on the positive in her speech, WOMEN and stop paying attention to her attire. She could’ve showed up in a brown paper bag and HER message would still be received the same way BRILLIANT. @ AMW, Karen, Mozarella, and Ani Dolan, your opinion is flawed and inappropriate. That’s what is inappropriate, you are not the fashion police although you obviously feel like you are. Ask most designers and they will state this was appropriate for the magnitude of the event and especially for her style.

  18. Mrs. E at 8:42 am

@ Madeline Hart…reading your comment speaks volumes on your sense of appropriateness, because it SEEMS as though you have no class. Before you poke holes in the way the FLOTUS dresses and what is or is not appropriate, learn how to communicate in this new age called BLOGGING and written communication. Spell checking is a great new appropriate way of social networking, you should try it. I’m sure we can count on you for your inappropriate comments on her Inauguration attire when she becomes the 45th FLOTUS for the new term. Oh BTW (AND that means, by the way:-)), see you at the Inauguration. LOL!!!!!

  19. Miss B at 6:04 pm

I wouldn’t call it inappropriate, but I don’t understand why people call her so “stylish” either. She dresses like an old lady, and she does not wear clothing that flatters her body type. The dress pictured in this article is hideous in my own opinion.
