Ja Rule Loves Jail Like Cooked Food (Sorta) :: “This place is amazing….”

35-year-old rapper Ja Rule (real name Jeffrey Atkins) is now serving a 2 year prison sentence at New York’s Midstate Correctional Facility for gun possession. Just before going away to do his time, Ja Rule was in the studio recording the last bits of his upcoming album, “Pain Is Love 2.” In a recent interview, he admitted that all the last minute cram sessions in the studio were stressful just because he, his team, and his family members were all quite aware that he would be going off to jail in just a matter of days. He said,
“My back was against the wall. I didn’t think we’d have time to do what I set out to do, but it came together much better than I could ever imagine.”
The producer of his album confessed,
“Anyone who was a part of those sessions felt the intense creative energy in the room, and knew we were on a mission. I remember at the last session, at one point the studio assistant got really choked up and emotional. We all knew he was going to prison the next day. It was a heavy moment. I think everyone in the room was pretty overwhelmed.”

Ja Rule also shared that he didn’t expect to meet such “amazing” people once he got to the facility. But according to what he said in his interview, he has made some irreplaceable bonds with a couple other inmates. His new friend, “Hevey D” (real name Alan Hevesi) is a former state controller who’s in jail for a corruption scheme. He also met “Koz” (real name Dennis Kozlowski) who is an ex-CEO, and encouraged JaRule to buy into stocks. Of them, Ja Rule says,
“Outside, you don’t meet guys like this every day. This place is amazing… Hevey’s a Democrat like me, so that helps. He told me how it’s like pulling teeth with the two parties trying to get bills passed… I was studying for my GED and Koz came in and talked to me and said, ‘if you need any help, let me know’… Koz just got out on work release. Not to say I wish he was still here, but they’re both great, smart guys… It’s funny, we’re from totally different walks of life. But when you’re here, you’re here.”
Apparently these new relationships are helping him enjoy his stay in prison a bit more than was expected. You can catch Ja Rule’s “Love Is Pain 2” out in stores on February 28th.
