Olympic Champion Gabby Douglas Ignores People’s Criticism About Her Hair

16-year-old Gabby Douglas, a member of the USA women’s gymnastic team, is catching some heat for her hair. Recently, the team’s only African American Gold medal member has received some twitter criticism over how she wore her hair during the competition.

The Huffington Post ran a story about the buzz surrounding Gabby’s hair style, even sharing a few non pleasant tweets:

Meanwhile, Gabby seems to be either ignoring the critics or too focused on competing in the Olympics. Thursday morning she tweeted her excitement about receiving a call from President Obama and lovin’ her some Jesus. She wrote:

Just talked to the President of the United States!!! WOW such and honor and a amazing feeling!! ???????????? #thankyou Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

What are YOUR thoughts?

People really need to get over it. This child is living her dreams while the people who attempt to criticize her are sitting on their couches doing nothing to better themselves. Appearance is not everything; character and ambition mean so much more. People should be uplifting Gabby, not throwing her under the bus because of something as minute as her hair!

As India Arie says “I am not my hair”. They are talking about her hair as she is getting Gold for America and herself. Ignorance.

My people, my people!! It is so disheartening we can never embrace or be encouraging when we do something positive. The so-called hair critics hair probably would not look like anything for all the artificial hair they wear on their dome.

Gabby is an Olympian at the age of 16 years old. And you are worried about her hair. Hell, endorsements, scholarships, monies, exposure, etc nothing but success due her faith, beliefs and encouragement from her family. Those criticizing her hair are failures for focusing on the things that are not important in life. Geesh! Idiots!!

Her talent and pleasant personality, along with her relationship with GOD make her hair not even noticable to me. Go Gabby!

Criticizing Gabby’s hair when this young lady, just made HISTORY is so Beyond ignorant! There are not enough words to describe just How ignorant. The world stage has opened up to this young lady and believe me a damned hairstyle was the least of her worries. When you are FOCUSED on being the Best of the Best, you don’t have time to worry yourself with something as trivial as a damned hairstyle. Especially when you are sweating and tumbling through the air. There will be plenty of time for her to get her hair done, now that the main competition is over. I mean seriously?!

I JUST…JUST had a conversation with my middle school girls about how hair doesn’t define who you are and NOW we are entertaining this bs about Gabby’s hair?! Some people make educator’s jobs that much harder.
