This week, Howard University announced that entertainer, entrepreneur and music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs would deliver Howard University’s commencement speech in Washington, DC. The school also announced that Combs would be among five people who will receive honorary degrees as trailblazers in their fields. Combs was a Howard student in the late 1980s, but dropped out to pursue his career in music. He will receive an honorary doctorate in the humanities.

That’s why I can’t stand people sometimes. They basically saying they better than him because his road to success was a little different and diminishing all of his accomplishments. That’s why I’m glad I didn’t go to Howard. That’s the exact feel I got whenever I visited.. That the students think they better than everybody. A self-made entrepreneur and philanthropist isn’t even good for them smh..

As I have read over my comment it does seem that I am attacking Duffy because he didn’t go to college. That was not what I was trying to say.My comment was more of a disappointment in how we minimize education as a society. We seem to respect the hustle and the grind. The short cut to everything.Making a choice for higher education and achieving that degree for hard work just doesn’t seem as valued. And because someone has become a millionaire and maybe in some cases donated large sums of money to such institutions,I can get an Honary degree. And it just sends a mixed signal to some young adults.

And those kids already see that education is highly important because he is speaking at THEIR graduation. Apparently, they already see the importance of education or they wouldn’t be in those seats and walking across the stage. As I have listed many celebs/actors/inventors/etc… who have not attended college or barely even finished high school and daily express how valuable school was to them for setting the blueprint. What’s wrong with having the degree and grinding and hustling? It is extremely critical and judgmental of everyone acting like because he has no degree he has absolutely nothing to offer and isn’t good enough. Because regardless of how u put it or phrase it all nicely, that’s what you are saying.. that he isn’t good enough. He has probably had to work harder than most people will ever have to work in their lifetimes. But that hard work is diminished because he didn’t finish school or saw another route on the road to success. Please… extremely judgmental.

I don’t know about this “he didn’t graduate” logic. Diddy has accomplished a lot… more than we probably see in the headlines and on tv. The hard way. He was an intern at HU and became his own boss and CEO. I get why they’d have him as a commencement speaker. Steve Jobs never graduated college & so many were moved by his speech. Oprah dropped out with one credit left and no one mentions that, but I guess because she is Oprah right? People are acting as if Diddy thought 20 years ago “Let me drop out and one day get an honorary degree.” HU asked him! He is only getting the degree because that is customary to give the commencement speakers an honorary degree… it doesn’t belittle the value of education. It is what has been done for decades! I just don’t see the need for the students and others to be so upset. No one has this outrage when other celebs don’t have degrees. And I also agree with a previous poster that his personal life shouldn’t come into play in this case. He is a good father (has even taken in kids who weren’t his biologically), last I heard his son got a scholarship to school and is doing very well, he instills a work ethic in them. What’s the problem?

Education is critically important but it isn’t the only measure of success nor should it be. Students need to hear from people at all levels of society if they want to deal successfully with the larger world. All colors, backgrounds, education levels, etc… It is very self-righteous to close the door to having this very successful man share tips to them. A degree doesn’t make you better than anybody. I know a lot of people on both sides of the fence (with degrees, w/o degrees) and those with degrees aren’t necessarily better off. Since when is college for everyone? Not everyone needs to go to college. I went and in this economy, my college education has not done me one bit of good (although I am very proud of my degree and the hard work it represents). So what he had an alternative way to look at life? Walt Disney, Mark Zuckerberg, Ralph Lauren among those who never finished college. College is not a prerequisite for success. Our race is indeed always angry for something or another.

At every college graduation in the country this spring colleges and universities will give honorary degrees to famous, rich and successful people who did not earn a degree. This is not different. They do the same at Harvard, Yale, etc. Many successful people didn’t graduate but give money to these universities so others can get educations. Puffy gives money to Howard. Let the man have his day, I’m sure he is overwhelmed for his life to be coming full circle. Can you imagine be the keynote speaker at a school you took the risk to leave. he has always showed love for HU now he is getting that love back.
