Kelly Price On Being Type Casted on ‘R&B Divas LA’ & Mariah Carey Backlash
While promoting her upcoming album, Sing Pray Love, Kelly Price spoke with Essence about her experience on R&B Divas LA. It’s been no secret, Kelly’s appearance on the show caused somewhat of a controversy. The 40-year-old soulful singer says that while she was friendly with most of the cast, none of them had extremely tight relationships before the show:
I think people took it really hard because people thought that lifelong friendships were broken. But there were no lifelong friendships coming into the show. I knew every lady only because when you’ve been in the business as long as I have, there’s no way we haven’t crossed paths. But none of us came in as women that have been hanging out together or spending a lot of time together.
She does agree with Real Housewives of Atlanta’s NeNe Leakes, who’s been vocal that cast members are type-cast into different categories — a cuckoo bird, the crazy one, the softie, and the indecisive one.
Absolutely. It’s true. We are typecast, and they make a decision on who they want to push to that point

I just don’t understand what celebs mean when they say they were typecast or they were edited to look a certain way. You can only edit the material that is there… if the camera shows u acting crazy all the time, then you most likely are acting crazy. We may not see the sides where u have nice moments or whatever the full story is, but the crazy is still there! That’s all you! And how Kelly behaved with those women and talked to them could not be just her being typecast. Like she was a true bully. Cameras cannot put words in your mouth. They watch it back and can’t believe how ratchet they look. But no boo… that’s your personality in living color lol
She’s still trying to justify the fact that she came across not looking so nice.Kelly needs to own the fact that she thinks she’s the ish.Well,she’s not that big of a star.She can sing I give her that.I see now why she had just ok success.They can front all they want.But,most of the ladies that appear on these diva shows are stars from the past.They come on these shows to rejuvenate their careers.Everyone seen her as the nasty person that she showed.
