[EXCLUSIVE] Meelah Williams: Joining R&B Divas ATL, Leaving 702 & Relationship With Musiq Soulchild: ‘It’s complicated!’
The Jasmine Brand: What attracted you about the show, R&B Divas?
I’ve been approached before to do reality TV. I wanted to make sure I did the right type of reality TV. I’m not an overnight star, I’m a vocalist. I have a fan base and I’m a known recording artist and I wanted to make sure whatever I did made sense to that, as a singer, recording artist, and as Meelah the brand becoming a solo artist. What better than to do a show about vocalists?
The Jasmine Brand: Where you apprehensive at all?
Hell yeah. Unfortunately, reality TV has a negative connotation. I was like ‘Yo, I’m really about to dip into this pond of giving all my business, giving the blogs and everybody else the green light to talk sh*t.’ I’m a new mom, he’s my only child, he’s five-years old. I had to think about it, I was like ‘Do I want to put my child on TV?’. All of that was a factor in me deciding if I wanted to do that and recently he was diagnosed with autism so I’m just like ‘Do I want to talk about that?’ It’s definitely a tough decision because as you know, reality TV is very intrusive.
The Jasmine Brand: Were you apprehensive about sharing your son’s story?
Yeah, I didn’t want to talk about it at first, it took me a while to accept it. I didn’t want to talk about it, I didn’t know how I felt. I went through a slew of emotions but then I thought about it like, ‘If you have this platform, why not help other parents who are going through this same thing, other young girls who may be embarrassed or not know where to go to get help, or may need to see somebody who looks like you going through the same thing.’ God gave me this purpose for reasons why not talk about it?
The Jasmine Brand: Your son’s father, Musiq, how does he feel about you doing reality TV?
