[VIDEO] Common Talks Erykah Badu’s Box & Beefing With Drake Over Serena Williams
Common: I be focused on my music alot and work alot, acting and different things. Sometimes that’s hard to balances with different things so sometimes that’s hard to balance with a relationship. I do like relationships but a lot of times I been in relationships, I don’t make my best albums. I would have to find the right relationship. A woman that understands the time you have to give to your work. It’s not like I’m only doing music, I’m working to do other things.
The Breakfast Club: I heard you’re done with industry chicks.
Common: I was over it for a second for sure.
The Breakfast Club: You admitted to Combat Jack that Erykah Badu really does have that good, good like the hood always thought?
Common: The hood knows what it is. Erkyah got something with her, she got something special. Erykah a raw girl, she got a lot to her. She’s from the hood, point blank. She’s just one of those people from the hood that’s artisty, artistic, spiritual, she’s got a lot to her.
The Breakfast Club: Did Serena really break your heart?
Common: Me and Serena was together, but we broke up. I don’t know specifically her and Drake, it felt like obviously somethings going on, I ain’t dwell on it too much. I ain’t have no problem with that, you do what you do. After a while I felt like in some of his songs he was saying stuff that was subliminal to me. And I was like, you just don’t know now-a-days cats be doing them sneak disses and after a while it was like I’m just going to come out and say what I need to say. It was a show I was at and I left and Drake said something out to the crowd, some tough stuff. So then I was like, ‘aight, it was that time’ because I knew he was directing it to me. We kept it on record and after that it was squashed.
The Breakfast Club: You ever call Serena and say ‘You messing with homie?’
Common: I definitely talked to her about it. At the end of the day, once she aint ya lady, what can I say? It don’t have nothing to do with me at that point.
The Breakfast Club: Would you do anything different now, would you reach out to him first?
Common: I don’t know him, but If I woulda saw him, I would’ve said face to face. I’m a person that’s going to confront the situation.
The Breakfast Club: What was the craziest thing you did, when you were with [Erykah Badu]?
Common: The craziest thing I did was drinking wheat grass all the time. That relationship wasn’t bad. It wasn’t like she was like ‘drink this.’ When you’re around somebody that’s healthy [you adapt]—that’s a strong woman, I give it to E.
The Breakfast Club: Out of Taraji, Erkyah, Serena [and Kerry] who did your mom really love?
Common: My mother loved Taraji and funny enough she got cool with Serena even more after we broke up.
The Breakfast Club: Would you ever go back to Serena?
It’s like once I’ve experienced that person its like man, sometimes life goes on. I can’t say I never would go back but Serena and Erkyah was the most serious relationships that I had as an adult and after its one of those things, its like, ‘I have to move forward.’ It was real love right there. Both of those women I could’ve married. I was like if I’m not supposed to be there, we’re just supposed to be friends.
