(EXCLUSIVE) Seth MacFarlane Scores in Legal Battle Accusing Him of Stealing “Ted”
They said MacFarlane stole their character after watching it online because the similarities between the two characters were too similar — both hung out on the couch, excessively smoked and drank beer. They both had friends who were washed up child stars and they were both active on social media. They sued him for damages for jacking their character and using it in his hit “Ted”.
MacFarlane fired back at the lawsuit denying all allegations in the complaint filed by the production company. He then states that “Ted” was “conceived, created, and developed independently of Plaintiff and without the use or copying of any characters, concepts, or expression allegedly created by Plaintiff.”
The famed director also said that there is no actionable similarity between Charlie and Ted — meaning if there are similarities, they are ones that cannot be copyrighted such as both drinking, smoking and loving prostitutes. He demanded the lawsuit be thrown out and the company be awarded nothing.
On March 18th, docs were filed in the case which explained that Bengal Mangle Productions admits that after seeing all the evidence during the discovery portion of the lawsuit, they have determined that MacFarlane didn’t steal anything from them and independently created the character “Ted”.
The company says they cannot go forward with their lawsuit and are dismissing all claims against him and each party will pay their own attorney fees. See the exclusive court docs.
