Viola Davis On Winning An Emmy: “It’s not just the award. It’s what it’s going to mean to young girls — young brown girls, especially.”
Now being able to be selective about her work in front of and behind the camera:
I’ve learned the power of great narrative, and I want to be able to have some semblance of control over that than to just be at the mercy of what’s out there.
Wanting roles that take her out of her comfort zone, but show the experience of being a woman:
I think women are very complicated human beings, and I think there’s an oversimplification of women when you see them on screen.
Being tired of romantic comedies:
I always to want to say, Who are you really? Do you pop a Xanax every once in a while? Do you not like someone because you’re jealous? Did you have a really bad relationship that you messed up? Do you go to therapy? Are you mean? Anything? I look for something that shows us as the complicated people that we are. And there’s beauty in that.

You know I really didn’t pay THAT much attention to Viola until she won the award. And after last night on How to Get Away with Murder….after her scene of kissing a woman. I knew she deserved that award. Congrats to her.
