‘The Color Purple’, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., ‘Hamilton’ Snag Tony Awards + See Complete Winner List
Last night, the 2016 Tony Awards took place on Sunday. The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known informally as the Tony Award, recognizes achievement in live Broadway theatre. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances, and an award is given for regional theatre. Several discretionary non-competitive awards are also given, including a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award. The awards are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.
This year, “Hamilton” snagged 11 awards. ‘The Color Purple‘ won Best Revival of a Musical and Cynthia Erivo won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical was snagged by Leslie Odom Jr., “Hamilton.”
