Nelsan Ellis Heart Failure Brought On By Alcohol Withdrawal

The family of former True Blood star Nelsan Ellis is speaking out about the exact circumstances of his death. The late actor’s manager, Emily Gerson Saines, revealed on Monday July 10th, that his family said his heart failure was brought on by alcohol withdrawal. The family said that he “suffered from drug and alcohol abuse for years” and recently tried to “withdraw from alcohol on his own” after “many stints in rehab”. His manager also stated,

According to his father, during his withdrawal from alcohol he had a blood infection, his kidneys shut down, his liver was swollen, his blood pressure plummeted, and his dear sweet heart raced out of control.

The statement from his family read,

On the morning of Saturday July 8th, after four days in Woodhull Hospital, Nelsan was pronounced dead. Nelsan was a gentle, generous and kind soul. He was a father, a son, a grandson, a brother, a nephew, and a great friend to those that were lucky enough to know him. Nelsan was ashamed of his addiction and thus was reluctant to talk about it during his life. His family, however, believes that in death he would want his life to serve as a cautionary tale in an attempt to help others.

Nelsan Ellis was 39.

Glad the family is bringing this to light. I hope it will help others who are suffering the affects of addiction. As drugs isn’t the only addiction that can kill you. My uncle suffers from alcohol addiction. As w/any addiction, professional help is the only safe way to detox the body. Unfortunately Nelsan wasn’t aware of the consequences of self withdrawal/detox. Your body is so dependent on the alcohol/drugs, that it can not function w/o it. That’s why it takes the process of slowly weening the body of off the alcohol/drug (under supervised medical care). This is so sad, he was only 39!

I never knew this same practice applied to alcohol. I didn’t think it had the same effects like crack/heroin. Never considered alcohol withdrawal. Definitely something to share with the world.
