Eddie Murphy To Star In Netflix’s ‘Dolemite Is My Name’
Eddie Murphy will star in a new Netflix movie, “Dolemite Is My Name.” The film will begin production on June 12. Craig Brewer who directed “Hustle and Flow”, is set to direct. The movie is about
the life of actor and comedian Rudy Ray Moore, the star of the blaxploitation Dolemite movies.
Moore, who was influenced by legendary comedians Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor, started his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s. He also worked in a Hollywood record store during that time. While working at the record store, he began hearing stories about a pimp and a hustler named Dolemite. These stories inspired Rudy to create his alter-ego Dolemite and became apart of his club act. He began producing records that mixed humor and a ghetto fantasy character, burnishing the legend. While these records were too explicit to have on display in record stores, they became an underground hit.
Eddie, who is producing this movie with John Davis and John Fox, has been wanting to play this role for a
decade. Murphy most recently starred in 2012’s “A Thousand Word’s” and 2016’s “Mr. Church.”
