‘The Chi’s’ Jason Mitchell Back Peddles After Supporting Roseanne – I Wasn’t Familiar w/ The Situation

While on the red carpet at the BET Awards in Los Angeles, Jason Mitchell, star of  “Detroit,” “Straight Outta Compton”, “Mudbound” and Showtime’s The Chi, was asked about the Roseanne reboot returning without Roseanne Barr. He tells Entertainment Tonight:

I think it’s tough that society has come to a place where like, we can’t even take a joke anymore, you know what I mean? I grew up on Roseanne and I don’t see no wrong on Roseanne.

The actor continued,

I want us to all get along, you know what I mean? I think we should all be able to coexist and in the meantime, I’ll be able to joke about it because it’s funny.

It wasn’t long before Mitchell began receiving some backlash of his own.

Mitchell took to Twitter to clarify his statements, admitting that he wasn’t entirely familiar with Roseanne’s tweets.

Regarding Roseanne, I’ll admit I really wasn’t familiar with the tweet the interviewer was referring to when she asked me it. After reading it, it’s clear that what Roseanne said was wrong — even if she was joking, there is nothing funny. I am happy for the cast and crew whose livelihoods were affected by her offensive tweet to have jobs again on The Conners spinoff… PS. Don’t let the internet let you all forget who I am.. playas f*ck up.. #builddontbash

Mitchell also thanked those who were willing to educate him rather than blindly jump down his throat.

Thank you for this because I’m human like everybody else. We need to have a few “n*gga meetings” if they want all of us to have the same knowledge on everything. I ain’t worried about Roseanne..I got kids.

It seems his apology was accepted.
