Azealia Banks Accuses Nicki Minaj of Stealing Mermaid Theme

Rapper Azealia Banks has taken, yet another, jab at fellow rapper Nicki Minaj. This time, it’s regarding the use of mermaid and aquatic themes, which she claims Nicki stole from her. Nicki is dropping a video for her single, “Bed,” featuring singer Ariana Grande. In promotion of the video, she released images of herself dressed as a mermaid on a beach.

Starting with an Instagram story, Banks posted:

When your mermaid tail looks like pants 

Apparently, Azealia Banks fans recognize that aquatic themes are associated with being the rappers’s “rap identity,” just as Nicki is associated with Barbie themes. A fan tweeted in Azealia’s defense:

shes not delusional. Her first tour was called mermaid ball. she’s the rap mermaid. Fantasea 2 is about to drop – a whole album about her underwater fantasy..we ALL know if Azealia put our a Barbie visual what it would be. Mermaid has BEEN her rap identity. She would be mad

 

She continued:

Why does nicki Minaj have to be so damn corny. Like sometimes it’s just like sis !!!!! Find some art !!! Please !! Lol

Azealia responded to a Twitter user reminding her that she asked Nicki for a feature recently:

Nah she can keep it now. She’s giving me aunty chicken of the sea tuna in a can baked potatoe vibes. I’m good on it now bye barbz

Azealia continued:

Nicki tweeted what Azealia believes was a response to her rants:

Does Azealia Banks have a legitimate concern about the integrity of her art – or is this another over the top attempt at attention in promotion of her album?
