John David Washington Checks Interviewer Who Overlooked His Mother
John David Washington, son of noted actors Denzel and Pauletta Washington, isn’t allowing anyone to slight his mother! John recently sat down for an interview with the Today Show to discuss his breakout role in Spike Lee’s latest film, BlacKkKlansman, which is being met with great reviews. But during the introduction, he stopped his interviewer in his tracks when he was described as “the son of Denzel Washington,” without mentioning his mother, Pauletta.
“ – and Pauletta Washington, who was earning more money than he was when they married and before they married. She was on Broadway working. She paid for the first date – she paid the bill, [and] paid the cab ride. [She’s a] classically trained pianist, went to Juilliard…you know, she’s a great artist in her own right, and I learned a lot from her.”
Oop! The Ballers actor made sure the world knew that his mother Pauletta is certainly not just the wife of Denzel. In fact, she’s known for her work in the movie Beloved alongside Oprah Winfrey, and most recently, the Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It. John continued with this endearing anecdote about his upbringing:
“My father taught me how to hunt. My mother taught me how to love.”
