Demi Lovato Quits Twitter After Facing Backlash For Joking About 21 Savage
Grand opening, grand closing! Less than three months after returning to social media since her rehab stint, singer Demi Lovato has deleted her Twitter account. News recently broke of rapper 21 Savage being detained by ICE during Super Bowl weekend in Atlanta, saying he’s an illegal immigrant from the U.K. Since then, many memes making fun of the rapper being British have gone viral on social media. Demi Lovato seemingly thought they were entertaining. She tweeted:
“So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”
However, rapper Wale didn’t appreciate Demi making light of 21 Savage’s situation. He called Demi out with the following tweet:
“Why is somebody freedom funny …I don’t get the joke”
21’s manager also took offense to Demi’s joking. She noted that 21 Savage was supportive of Demi Lovato’s rehab stint after her drug relapse last year.
Apparently many social media users joined Wale in challenging Demi on laughing at 21 Savage’s detainment with retorts about her drug use. Ouch. She commented:
“If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs”
She continued:
“F*ck Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore.”
Demi Lovato, then, deleted her account.
So, Demi took to her Instagram Story to explain her position on the Twitter backlash, starting with the meme that she found funny.
She explained:
“Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke.. not have I EVER laughed at that. The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let alone their OD.”
She continued:
“Lastly, I wasn’t making fun on anything having to do with deportation or even anything against him. I was laughing at who the f*ck knew 21 was British? Literally no one. That’s it. It doesn’t go deeper than that. I’m sorry if I upset people truly. Yo @wale if you wanna talk, then answer my dms”
Were Demi Lovato’s 21 Savage-jokes harmless, or in poor taste? Let us know in the comments.
