Smokey Robinson On J.Lo’s Motown Tribute, “Anyone Who Is Upset Is Stupid”
When it was announced that Jennifer Lopez was set to be apart of a Motown tribute at the 2019 Grammy Awards many were scratching their heads trying to make sense of the decision. The backlash on social media was severe, with a collection of meme’s and status updates referencing the puzzling choice. Now, Smokey Robinson, one of Motown’s signature acts, is coming to Lopez’s defense.
The Motown tribute at this year’s Grammy’s is expected to be one of the show’s highlights, but many fans of the legendary record label may be too focused on Jennifer Lopez’s part in the tribute to enjoy the rest of it. While talking to media outside Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala on Saturday, Robinson, who’s also performing in the Motown tribute alongside Lopez gave his opinion on the uproar:
“I don’t think anyone who is intelligent is upset. I think anyone who is upset is stupid.”
He added that Lopez has more than enough credibility to perform in the tribute due to her “growing up in her Hispanic neighborhood.” Although he stated her upbringing is beside the point and she’s fit to tribute label just like anyone else.
He ended his statements on Lopez, saying:
“Motown was music for everybody. Everybody. Who’s stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing anything for Motown?”
The 61st annual Grammy Awards air February 10 at 8PM on CBS and air hosted this year by singer/songwriter Alicia Keys.
