Beyonce Dedicates GLAAD Award To Late Gay Uncle Who Had HIV: He Lived His Truth [VIDEO]
Jay Z and Beyonce Accept the GLAAD Vanguard Award: “Who you make love to and take that a** to Red Lobster is your human right!”
Is there anything the Carters can’t do? Power couple Jay Z and Beyonce accepted the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony last night in Los Angeles for making a difference by promoting equality for the LGBTQI community. Together they gave a moving accepting speech, highlighting the importance of gay and lesbian acceptance in the Black community and their own personal connections to it.
Jay Z dedicated his award to his mother, Gloria Carter, for finally choosing to live in her truth as a lesbian in her 60s. He said:
“I also wanna- ’cause I didn’t get to do it last year – honor my mother who received the award last year. I hope to follow in her footsteps of spreading love and acceptance, and her beautiful speech at the end of the song, “Smile,” and for allowing me to tell the story.”
Beyonce revealed that she holds the LGBTQI community close to her heart because her uncle lost his battle with HIV. She dedicated she and Jay’s award to him:
“I want to dedicate this award to my Uncle Johnny – the most fabulous gay man I’ve ever met – who helped raise me and my sister. He lived his truth. He was brave and unapologetic during a time when this country wasn’t as accepting. And witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived. I’m hoping that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely.”

Beyonce also hilariously declared that your sexual preference is your human right with a reference to her hit song, “Formation.”
“To choose who you love is your human right. How you identify and see yourself is your human right. Who you make love to and take that a** to Red Lobster is your human right. So, you do that!”
