Kelly Rowland Seemingly Addresses Beyonce Comparisons: “People Call Me Second Best”
Multi-hyphenate singer/”X-Factor: UK” judge Kelly Rowland wants fans and naysayers to put some respect on her resume. As shown in a “Red Bull Music Studios Sessions” episode, Kelly dropped a bomb about what it’s really like to stand alongside Destiny’s Child bandmate Beyonce. One of the in-house music producers asked Kelly:
“Do you have any concepts in mind? Like, to take me into a direction…”
She, shockingly, replied:
“The elephant in the room for me has always been second best. That’s actually the first time I’ve said it out loud.”
This isn’t Kelly’s first time addressing the sting of living in the shadow of Beyonce’s massive success. In her 2013 single, she sang:
“While my sister was on stage, killing it like a motherf*cker / I was enraged, feeling it like a motherf*cker / Bird in a cage, you would never know what I was dealing with / Went our separate ways, but I was happy she was killing it / Bittersweet, she was up, I was down / No lie, I feel good for her, but what do I do now? / Forget the records, off the record, I was going through some bullshit / Post-‘Survivor,’ she on fire, who wanna hear my bullsh*t?”
However, the ladies of Destiny’s Child couldn’t be closer.
Beyonce included dynamic DC reunions in her stage sets for the Super Bowl halftime show and her historic Coachella Music Festival performances.
The episode also shows footage of Kelly Rowland working with songwriters Red Bull hand-picked to craft her latest EP, “The Kelly Rowland Edition.” Some of them include Alex Saad, P. Wright, pineappleCiti, and Jordan Douglas.
