Ashley Graham On Being In An Interracial Marriage & Her Husband Experiencing Racism: A Man Spit On Him, It Was Heartbreaking!
Model Ashley Graham is living her best life these days, with a thriving career, multiple business endeavors and a loving husband—but in a new interview she reveals that racism still rears its ugly head in her interracial marriage.
Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) racism is still extremely present in this country and regardless of your social or economic status, you’re not exempt from its damage. Model Ashley Graham, 31, knows this all too well, as she is married to cinematographer Justin Ervin, who is black—and she recently opened up about some of the ugly encounters that have happened to her husband.

On just how difficult it is for her husband as a black man and some of his experiences, Graham stated:
“I see what my husband has to go through every day. We had gone to Italy, and a man spat on him. It’s heartbreaking. It can make you really angry. But it’s like, how are you going to change that anger into a teachable moment? The biggest thing that we have to conquer is diversity and inclusion. You can’t just check the box and be like, ‘Oh, we did it.’”
She also went further to acknowledge that the best way to understand someone’s different experiences is to educate yourself:
“Read books; have conversations. Educate yourself. The more you have conversations with people around you that are different than you, [the more] you’re going to learn and you’re going to grow. No one who isn’t black is going to understand a black person’s life, but they don’t have to be ignorant toward [what it’s like].”

Graham added that she wants to be prepared for the future conversations she’ll have once she has children:
“I want to know as much as I can as a white woman who is going to be raising black children. We’re going to have to have that conversation of ‘Mommy’s white, Daddy’s black,’ and I want to be prepared.”
