Nipsey Hussle – LAPD & City Attorney’s Office Were Investigating Rapper For Gang-Related Activity Near His Marathon Store Before His Death

Nipsey Hussle was crowned a Los Angeles hero in the hours following his shocking death on March 31. Steve Soboroff, the President of the police commission in L.A. revealed plans to meet with Hussle the day after he died to help prevent gang violence.

Mayor Eric Garcetti also said,

“Nipsey Hussle was an artist who touched our city and lives.”

Still, new reports reveal Hussle, whose real name is Ermias Asghedom, was reportedly under investigation for possible gang activity at Crenshaw and Slauson, the intersection that housed his famous The Marathon clothing store, according to the NY Times. It’s also the place where Hussle was sadly gunned down and killed. A cellphone store and barbershop in the strip mall are also under investigation.

Despite his passing, officials are reportedly moving forward with the investigation, and it’s possible Hussle’s business partners could be impacted. During the investigation, the city told Hussle’s former landlords to evict him and his partners from the property. The landlords went a different route and sold the property to Hussle and investors for $2.5 million.

Hussle’s brother, Sam Asghedom, said during the rapper’s celebration of life at the Staples Center in April,

“I don’t know if anybody knows, but we had a 30-day notice and they were kicking us out of all the businesses we owned in the lot.”

He added that the landlords told them,

“At this point if you guys are still interested in buying the lot, you know, rather than kick you guys out we’re willing to sell it to you.”

Hussle wasn’t one to hide his past connection to the Rollin’ 60s Crips. But recently, worked to help lower and even stop gang violence in the area, hence his scheduled meeting with Soboroff. He bought the strip mall and planned to build new apartments to help his efforts against gang violence as well. He was known for hiring men who served time in prison, especially for gang affiliations, in order to help with their post-prison life.

Hussle was 33 when he died. Eric Holder, the alleged gunman, is currently on trial for the crime.
