Evelyn Lozada Defends Identifying As Afro-Latina As Old Tweet Resurfaces
In a recent interview with E!’s “Just the Sip,” “Basketball Wives” star Evelyn Lozada revealed that she traced her ancestry, and found out some shocking information about her ethnic background. It turns out that she is Afro-Latina.
She said:
“I consider myself an Afro-Latina…I have back-tracked my roots, so I know where I come from. So, you know, I have a little bit of everything. It’s funny ’cause on this season, somebody was like, ‘Bitch, you think you Black.’ And I’ve never had anybody tell me that. And I was so offended, ’because I didn’t know what that meant. I’m like, ‘I think I’m Black?’ You know, I grew up in New York! I know where I come from! I’ve done DNA tests just to know, but I wanna be able to tap into that more. I’m proud to be Puerto Rican, and from New York, and Afro-Latina, and all that good stuff.”
Shortly after the interview was published, an alleged old tweet from 2012 resurfaced where she denied being part-Black.
Per social media norm, fans and followers held Evelyn Lozada accountable for that tweet considering her newfound ethnic identity. She explained:
“I grew up in a very diverse and eclectic neighborhood where race and ethnicity was not much of a conversation. We all just connected based on someone’s vibe…I never discussed my ethnicity on TV because quite honestly until recently, I never felt the need to until comments were made about me “thinking” I was black. How many of us feel the need to go around and constantly defend our ethnicity?”
Is Evelyn Lozada justified in her identifying with being Afro-Latina? Let us know in the comments.
