Tina Lawson Breaks Silence On Ex-Husband Mathew Knowles’ Breast Cancer Diagnosis ‘He’s Going To Be Fine’

Tina Lawson has spoken out publicly for the first time about her former husband Mathew Knowles being diagnosed with breast cancer. And she has high hopes that he’ll pull through.

While attending the opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta with her husband, actor Richard Lawson, Tina said of Knowles’s diagnosis:

“Thank God he [discovered] it very early on, and he is going to be fine. I’m claiming it.”

Knowles revealed his battle with breast cancer earlier this month. He said that his children and Tina were the first people he told after his doctor informed him of the diagnosis in the summer.

Knowles is father to singers Beyonce and Solange with Tina as well as children Koi and Nixon from other romances.

He said in an open essay of his diagnosis,

“The first calls I made were to my kids, and my former wife, Tina. My wife, Gena, already knew; she went with me to the exam.”

He also added during an appearance on “Good Morning America”,

“My first call was to my family. My kids have a higher risk, even my grandkids…”

As for his health status, he has had one breast removed, and will have the second removed next year. He said,

“You can survive this, but it has to be early detection.”

He and Tina married in 1980, and she filed for divorce in 2009. She pulled the divorce papers, but then ultimately filed again in 2011.

She then tied the knot with Richard in 2015.

Knowles also went on to marry Gena Charmaine Avery in 2013.
