R. Kelly Denies Bribing Govt. Employee To Get Aaliyah A Fake ID For Their Alleged Marriage Certificate
R. Kelly Denies Claims He Bribed Illinois Govt Worker To Get Aaliyah A Fake ID For Their Alleged Marriage Certificate
New accusations against R. Kelly claim that he bribed an Illinois government worker so he could get singer Aaliyah a fake I.D. to marry her when she was 15. R. Kelly was 27-years-old at the time. They reportedly tied the knot in a Chicago hotel in 1994. But the marriage was said to have been quickly annulled after her parents found out. Interestingly enough, Aaliyah’s family has previously denied any inappropriate relationship between the two, let alone a marriage.
Now, the singer has entered a not-guilty plea, denying the allegation, after being arraigned. He underwent the plea via video feed from jail in Chicago, where he’s currently serving time on sexual charges like child pornography. His trial is scheduled to begin next year.
His lawyer Douglas Anton states,
“The judge just wanted to make sure Mr. Kelly understood all the proceedings because it is known that (Kelly) does not read or write exceedingly well, except when it comes to amazing musical tracks. So he said yes (he understood). He was in very great spirits.”
The new charges mark the first time Aaliyah has been mentioned in the criminal proceedings against R. Kelly.
She was referenced in the Surviving R. Kelly documentary on Lifetime earlier this year, when one of his former background singers, Jovante Cunningham, said she actually witnessed a 20-something R. Kelly having sexual intercourse with the singer, who was in her teens.
His former tour manager and assistant, Demetrius Smith, also claimed Aaliyah was pregnant at one point.
Still, Aaliyah’s mother, Daine Haughton, later tweeted that Jovante Cunningham was lying, and slammed the whole documentary.
The woman and so-called back up singer in the forthcoming “Surviving…” documentary that describes seeing, meeting or ever breathing the same air as my daughter, Aaliyah, is lying and is a liar. My husband and I were always on tour with her and at interviews and every place she went throughout her entire career. Whoever this woman is, I have never seen her before anywhere on planet earth, until now.
These lies and fabrications cannot be tolerated and allowed to be spewed from the forked tongues of saboteurs of Aaliyah’s legacy. My daughter only wanted to realize her dream of sharing her talent with the world, and give her all performing on stage, and in front of the camera for the fans she adored so much. She realized that dream, thanks to those true fans who still love and support her legacy unconditionally to this day. Shame on all those involved in this project who thought it kosher to drag Aaliyah’s name into a situation that has nothing to do with her today. Once again, this will not be tolerated.
Sincerely, Diane Haughton
