Kelly Rowland Recalls A Time Destiny’s Child Got Booed: We Were Crossing Over, There Was A Question Of If We Were Still Down
It may have been years since Destiny’s Child called it quits with their farewell album, but the idea of a comeback is still on the minds of their millions of fans. Kelly Rowland recently spoke about life in Destiny’s Child. In fact, she brought up a time that Destiny’s Child performed at HOT97’s Summer Jam and was met with “boo’s” from the crowd Kelly Rowland responded to the situation by saying it helped the group grow:
“It prepared us…around that time Destiny’s Child was crossing over, and because we were crossing over, I think that it was a question if we were still down or black.”
When asked how she and the rest of the group felt in that moment she replied,
“Before we went out there it was that overwhelming loud “boo” and we were looking at each other like “Are we going to do this, are we going to go out here?” I saw the look in B’s eyes and I was like ‘If she’s going out there I’m not letting her go out there by herself, I’m going with her…’ Here we are at the height of our career and we are being praised everywhere except for in our neighborhood.”

Kelly continued and addressed the importance of knowing yourself in the entertainment industry.
“It definitely plays a big role in this industry. If you don’t know who you are when you get in it, it will eat you up, chew you and spit you behind right out. You have to have some sort of moral. I’m so grateful that Tina [Lawson] was hell-bent on making sure if she was not there, there was a chaperone there because we were so young…B and Latavia had curvy bodies, so all the guys thought they were older…so you got guys hitting on us so we were guarded. I’m so happy that they did that and they protected us.”
