D.C. Mayor Renames Street In Front Of White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” In Honor Of Breonna Taylor’s Birthday

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser renamed a street in front of the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” and had the phrase painted on the street in massive yellow letters.

The street is also where protests have erupted in the days since the murder of George Floyd, as well as protests calling for justice for Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, two victims killed at the hands of law enforcement and a father-son duo, respectively. Today (June 5) also happens to be Breonna Taylor’s birthday, she would have turned 27 years old today.

Mayor Bowser posted two videos showing off Black Lives Matter Plaza, in the first video the mayor writes,

“Breonna Taylor, on your birthday, let us stand with determination. Determination to make America the land it ought to be.”

In the next video the mayor writes,

“The section of 16th street in front of the White House is now officially “Black Lives Matter Plaza”.

In a press conference about the newly erected plaza, Mayor Bower stated,

“There are people who are craving to be heard and to be seen, and to have their humanity recognized, and we had the opportunity to send that message loud and clear on a very important street in our city, and it is that message, and that message is to the American people, that Black Lives Matter black humanity matters, and we as a city raise that up as part of our values as a city.”
