Barack Obama Accuses Donald Trump Of Trying To ‘Actively Kneecap’ Postal Service To Affect 2020 Election

Former President Barack Obama criticized president Donald Trump in a recent interview with his former campaign manager David Plouffe. Barack Obama was directly referring to some comments that Donald Trump made earlier this week, suggesting that by giving the U.S. Postal Service more funding, they will be able to take in more mail in ballots, which would then be “fraudulent”.

While the former president did not mention Donald Trump’s name directly, there was no doubt that the message was directed to the current president. He stated:

“What we’ve seen in a way that is unique to modern political history is a President who is explicit in trying to discourage people from voting. What we’ve never seen before is a President say, ‘I’m going to try to actively kneecap the postal service to encourage voting and I will be explicit about the reason I’m doing it.’ That’s sort of unheard of, right? And we also have not had an election in the midst of a pandemic that is still deadly and killing a lot of people. So in that circumstance, the thing I’m most worried about is … how do we protect the integrity of the election process? How do we make sure that people’s votes are counted? How do we police and monitor how state officials are setting up polling places and ensuring that every vote is counted?”

Barack Obama continued,

“You now have the President throwing in this additional monkey wrench trying to starve the postal service. My question is what are Republicans doing where you are so scared of people voting that you are now willing to undermine what is part of the basic infrastructure of American life?”

These recent comments from the former president come as the U.S. postal service sent letters to 46 states and Washington D.C. warning voters that they could not ensure that all mail in ballots will arrive on time to be counted for the election in November. The letters also warn that even if a voter follows all the rules in the state to vote by mail, their vote may not count. Millions of Americans are expected to utilize the post office this November due to fears of the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump has so far been resistant to congressional Democrats’ efforts to provide billions of dollars to the Postal Service budget to help fund the extra work needed to process more mail in ballots as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, even though he later suggested he would not veto the funding if it were part of the next coronavirus relief package.
