Cardi B Doesn’t Want To Defund The Police, Says ‘We Need Cops’ In Deleted Tweet
Cardi B has posted and deleted her opinion of why she doesn’t want to defund the police.
She responded to a user who wrote,
“Cardi. Defund the police does NOT mean ABOLISH the police. It means reallocating all the money from the police to local municipalities. To social workers. Housing, education, employment, mental health care, and youth services. Stop sending military weapons used in war to police.”
The Up rapper clearly didn’t agree and replied,
“That’s bulls**t to me. We need cops and that’s facts we just need strict laws for cops.”
She added,
“If you shot somebody just like civilians you will go to jail that same day, get charge, wait for bond and go to trial. That will make you think twice about shooting anyone.”
Cardi B’s comments come as another black man was killed by a police officer.
Daunte Demetrius Wright, 20, was fatally shot during a traffic stop with officer Kimberly Potter in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota April 11. He was driving a Buick LaCrosse with his girlfriend when Potter pulled him over for expired tags. She discovered he had a warrant for not appearing in court as he faced charges for allegedly running from Minneapolis police and having a gun without a permit in June 2020. Potter decided to arrest him.
According to body camera footage, three officers went to his car. Officer Anthony Luckey going to the driver’s side and a third officer, who has not been identified, went to the passenger side. Potter was a training officer at the time and initially kept her distance. Luckey told Wright he had a warrant for his arrest. He opened the door and Wright got out of the car with his hands behind his back. Luckey tried to handcuff him when Potter came up and grabbed what looked like a proof-of-insurance card with her right hand before putting it in her left. Wright had a physical struggle with officers and got away before getting in his car. Potter threatened to tase him but instead of grabbing her taser, she grabbed her Glock 9 mm handgun and shot him once. She’s heard saying, “Oh s***, I just shot him.”
Days after the incident, Potter insisted that she meant to tase him, not shoot him.
After the shooting, Wright drove off and hit another car. He was pronounced dead on the scene while his girlfriend was hospitalized. The individuals in the other car were not hurt.
His death caused the cry to defund the police to resurface as former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin faces trial for the killing of George Floyd.
