Dionne Warwick Shares She’ll Have To Give It Some Thought When Asked If Mariah Carey & Toni Braxton Are Icons
Dionne Warwick isn’t afraid to share her true opinion on fellow superstars Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. Dionne Warwick is considered by many to be the first Black pop superstar. The 80-year-old entertainer is also one of the most-charted songstresses of all time. Dionne Warwick recently chatted with TrueExclusives and was asked what it takes to be considered an icon within the music industry. She answered,
“I don’t know. I just know when that status is reached, we know who they are. But what it takes, I don’t know. I wish I had the answer. I know it takes more than a hit record. I know that. There are many who never had a hit record who we know that are icons. Lena Horne, for one.”
When asked if she considers Grammy-Award-winning artist Mariah Carey as an icon Dionne Warwick revealed that she’d have to think about it.
“I don’t know. I don’t know her that well. I love her music. She writes incredibly well. ‘Hero’ happens to be one of my favorite songs that she wrote. I’d have to give that one thought.”

Dionne Warwick was also asked about Toni Braxton, who has 7 Grammys of her own, and if she would call her an Icon. She responded,
“I don’t know. I don’t know if that’s something that Toni would want; if that where she feels she’s heading. I think she’s enjoying her status as a recording artist. I enjoy watching and hearing her. I don’t know if it’s something she wishes to accomplish or not. That’s another one I’ll have to give thought to.”
