Garcelle Beauvais Educates ‘RHOBH’ Co-Star Kyle Richards On The Damages Of Racial Stereotyping: People Think We Don’t Pay For Our Rent, That We Don’t Tip
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais took co-star Kyle Richards to task about inadvertently spreading harmful stereotypes about Black women on Wednesday’s [May 26th] episode.
The two co-stars have been at odds over a $5,000 donation to a children’s hospital Kyle Richards publicly accused Garcelle Beauvais of not paying.
In their recent sit-down, Garcelle Beauvais shared that the invoice for the charity payment had been sent to an old address. After discovering the error, Garcelle has since paid the $5k donation.
During the conversation, Garcelle informed Kyle Richards that she was wrongly accused of not making the payment and that Kyle’s claims came with broader implications. Garcelle asked Kyle, “would you have said it to one of the white women?”
Showing her privilege, Kyle was visibly appalled by the question. However, Garcelle proceeded:
“This is how I feel. I feel like it was weaponized towards me being a black woman. I know you probably didn’t do that intentionally, but I don’t think you recognize the effect that it has on me being a black woman. There’s stereotypes that people think we don’t pay for our rent, that we don’t tip…”
Kyle responded:
“I would never even think like that.”
Garcelle pointed out,
“Because you don’t have to deal with that, because it’s not your reality, but it’s my reality.”
Garcelle went on to provide Kyle with a litany of examples to explain all of the considerations and concessions black people have to consciously think about when decision-making because of the stereotypes that come along with being black.
An example Garcelle referenced was the time she had to weigh whether or not to tip a rude and dismissive restaurant server.
“If I don’t tip, they’re gonna say, ‘Black people don’t tip anyway; she would have never tipped.’ But the service was horrible. So there’s all this stuff that people don’t realize that we think about before we have to do anything.”
In a confessional, Kyle discussed how their talk affected her. She said:
” I have not walked in her shoes. Even though I didn’t mean it like that,I can understand now why she unfollowed me on Instagram. I have a much better understanding of who she is and where she comes from.”
