Missy Elliott Recalls ‘I Used To Cry When They Clowned Me’ As She Reflects On Iconic Sound

Missy Elliott’s infamous sound effects are just some of the reasons she’s the iconic artist she is today.

But she revealed in a recent tweet that she wasn’t always supported for her pioneering sound.

She replied to a video of Lil Wayne’s interview with DJ Khaledwho asked the Lollipop rapper which artist influenced him in his earlier days, like when he was making hits such as Tha Block Is Hot.

Lil Wayne said with no hesitation,

“Missy Elliott.”

He added,

“That was my favorite rapper… that would be why I was making so many sounds. Missy was into the whole ‘BRRT’ …So when Mannie Fresh would get you in the studio he would remind you, ‘Hey you need to throw the ‘ha ha’ in there. I was like ‘Man he want me to do a sound for every d*** line.’ And so the ‘Block Burner’ song was my favorite song because my favorite artist was Missy Elliott.”

As Missy Elliott was influencing the likes of Lil Wayne, who is a 24-time Grammy nominee, she was having emotional moments behind the scenes.

She tweeted in response to Lil Wayne’s salute,

“When i 1st came in the game people laughed at me doing sound effects in my music – I used to cry when they clowned me but then I kept doing wild sounds/crazy adlibs in my songs & people began to rock wit it Years later those same sound effects are big in songs today”

She also replied to actress Robin Thede who saluted her vulnerability. She wrote,

I used to cry at the drop of a dime – I will say the Industry will TOUGHEN you up tho! I was DIFFERENT which some may have deemed my sound & style as weird But I remained TRUE to myself as a artist & Thankfully people gave my FUTURISTIC vibe a chance”
