Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman Plans To Run For President In 2036: I Don’t Have To Change Who I Am To Be A Leader
Amanda Gorman has big plans for the future. The 23-year-old poet has wanted to run for president since she was 11-years-old. According to reports, she remembers a teacher jokingly saying she could be president. She recalls responding,
“You’re right. That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
Since then, she’s been well on her way to the White House. Just this year Amanda Gorman became the youngest Inaugural poet. She rose to fame when she recited her poem called “The Hill We Climb” during President Biden’s ceremony.
Amanda Gorman also spoke about feeling like she had to choose poetry or politics. She’s realized that she doesn’t have to hide a part of herself to achieve something.
“I used to think about it in the more traditional sense of, okay, we’re going to do this poetry thing for a little bit, and then you’re going to put the pen down and switch over to politics.”
Gorman goes on to say how being at the 2021 Inauguration allowed her to speak with many leaders in politics and it showed her that her unique background can be a strength.
“Being able to talk to people like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, I realized I don’t have to change who I am to be a leader. If anything, those qualities will be what becomes my strength when I bring them into my field.”
The young wordsmith is already being meticulous about what she posts on social media in preparation for her future presidential run.
“I think to make the impossible more proximate, you have to treat it as if it’s in reaching distance.”
Gorman knows that she’d want to focus on the issues with climate change, sexual assault, and human trafficking. In the meantime, she’s looking forward to releasing her picture book called, Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem, in September. And in December she’ll release a new poetry collection, Call Us What We Carry.
