President Biden Criticizes NFL Over Lack Of Black Head Coaches In The League

President Joe Biden is the latest person to share their opinion over the NFL’s alleged head coaching diversity problem.

During a recent interview, President Biden, 79, addressed the discrimination claims that the NFL is currently facing and shared that he thinks the league can do better. He said,

“They haven’t lived up to what they committed to and lived up to being open about hiring more minorities to run teams.”

He continued,

“The whole idea that a league that is made up of so many athletes of color, as well as so diverse, that there’s not enough African American qualified coaches ‘to manage these NFL teams,’ it just seems to me that it’s a standard that they’d want to live up to.”

He added,

“It’s not a requirement of law, but it’s a requirement, I think, of just some generic decency.”

According to reports, despite the NFL consisting of 32 teams, with 71 percent of the players being people of color, there are only 3 head coaches of color at the moment.

President Biden’s remarks follow a racial discrimination suit that was filed earlier this month by former head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Brian Flores, 40, against the NFL, the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, and the Miami Dolphins organizations.

According to Flores’ suit, he was wrongfully subjected to fake interviews for a head coaching position by both the Broncos and the Giants in order for the teams to comply with the Rooney Rule, which requires every team to interview at least 2 external minority candidates for open head coaching positions.

In addition to that, Flores claims Miami’s team owner, Steven Ross, attempted to bribe him to purposely lose games so the team could have a better slot during the draft. Flores was reportedly offered $100,000 per loss by Ross. The suit adds that when Flores refused to accept the bribe, Ross led a campaign to treat him with,

“disdain and held out as someone who was noncompliant and difficult to work with.”
