Amazon studios recently announced it greenlit a feature documentary entitled Gifted & Black, which will follow the rise of the popular music web series Verzus, created by iconic hip-hop producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. The documentary, produced by Timbaland and Lena Waithe, will reportedly also highlight the impact of Black music, and how “it continues to be an uplifting and uniting salvation that endures through uncertain times.
The Covid-19 pandemic had everyone going through outside withdrawals when it first started. That’s when famed friends and music producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz concocted a genius plan to give their audience a way to mentally escape the turbulent nature of reality. What started as the two hip-hop giants going live on Instagram playing all the hit records in their extensive catalogs, turned into a widespread music concert phenomenon highly anticipated by many.
Now, the hit making pair are magnifying the concept, inspiration, and impact of their Verzus series.
According to reports, the documentary is a partnership between Amazon Studios, Hillman Grad Productions and Good Trouble Studios, with James Adolphus set to direct, while Lena Waithe, Beatz and Timbaland will produce. Gifted & Black will feature poignant interviews and archival footage that chronicle the roots of Black music.
Following the announcement from Amazon studios, Timbaland and Swizz took to their instagram accounts to celebrate the documentary deal:
During an interview discussing the upcoming film, Lena Waithe had this to say on behalf of Hillman Grad Productions:
“I’m grateful to Swizz and Tim for trusting us with something so historic. Verzuz is more than just two artists going song-for-song. It’s a testament to the power of Black people. It’s the joyful celebration of legacy that we all needed. With this documentary, we’re excited to take audiences behind the scenes of this global phenomenon, while also paying tribute to the artists that shaped us.”
