EXCLUSIVE: HGTV’s Egypt Sherrod Reveals How She & Her Husband Pitched & Created ‘Married To Real Estate’

HGTV star Egypt Sherrod is definitely someone who knows how to get things done. Her latest project, Married to Real Estate, is one that she and her husband, Mike Johnson, even created and pitched by themselves. In an exclusive interview with The Jasmine Brand, Egypt Sherrod opened up about how they got Married to Real Estate off of the ground, her role as an executive producer and its impact on the show, and more.

The show launched in 2022 and follows the couple as they try to balance home and work helping prospective homeowners find their dream property. Egypt Sherrod shared that the idea for the show was birthed out of the time spent at home during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. It had started becoming “so exhausting and so chaotic” around their house that they decided to film it.

“We were just like everyone else when the pandemic first hit, kind of stuck in the house, running our business from the kitchen island — oh, and by the way, virtual learning, which I have a whole other appreciation for teachers now. But it was so exhausting and so chaotic in our house that it started to get hilarious, and my husband said, ‘Let’s just film it.'”

After releasing content on social media and getting a few “viral” hits, she and husband Mike Johnson started an Ask Me Anything segment, where they would just talk, allowing viewers to see their personalities.

“It really endeared people and showed our personalities and that we’re like everybody else,” she noted.

“The network loved that aspect, just our social interactions with people … So we decided to shoot a sizzle reel, which showed us doing our business, working with our clients, balancing our family… We did the sizzle reel and sent it to the network. They were like, ‘That’s it, we love it!'”

From there, they were partnered with a production company, 51 Minds, behind shows like T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle and Below Deck: Mediterranean. Sherrod described that relationship as a “perfect marriage.”

She was also thrilled to be an executive producer on Married to Real Estate, a role that gives her greater control over the project. She said:

“It’s wonderful to have a seat at the table in a space where you have say and you can control the narrative about your own life, your business, and your family. I don’t think we would have it any other way, to be honest with you, because someone’s interpretation of who you are versus who we are authentically can be totally different, and I think that’s what’s been working.”
