Saweetie Reveals Why She Decided To Part Ways With Her Hair: ‘I Feel So Free’

Saweetie is finally sharing why she decided to part ways with her hair—and the ICY GRL has no regrets.

During an interview, the GLAMOUR cover model shared the love-hate relationship she had with her growing up. This may come as a surprise to some, but according to Saweetie,

“I hated my hair. It’s naturally really kinky and curly. It’s beautiful, but I was a tomboy and was like, ‘I don’t got no time for this.’”

The Best Friend rapper went into great detail about how she favored a “long, straight, smooth West Coast press,” before learning that her choice was built out of discriminatory beauty ideals. She said,

I just felt like my hair was very high maintenance and not easy to do. I always wished I had straight hair.

For Saweetie, the life-altering decision came with a deep meaning. It meant finally loving herself beyond the wigs, products and what the public wanted to see. She has also credited mindfulness with inspiring the move.

“I actually shaved it off because [during the] fourth quarter of last year, I learned about meditation. The deeper of an understanding I got of spirituality, self, alignment and purpose, I just wanted to start over with everything. And hair holds energy! I was like, ‘Damn, this hair been with me since, I don’t know, and I’m ready for a fresh start.’”

While she can’t wait to get her luscious curls back following years of damage from various hairstyles, Saweetie said her bald head makes her feel so free.

“I think getting in touch with your natural style is important, because it’s a part of self-love, self-care. If you can’t appreciate one part of [you], then you can’t appreciate yourself as a whole. I know this because I’ve struggled with different areas of loving myself.”

As previously reported, Saweetie did the big chop at the end of 2021, debuting her new blonde look while she was on vacation.
