‘Impeach Justice Clarence Thomas’ Petition Passes 400,000 Signatures

Americans are calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court justices following the Court’s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade last week.

As previously reported, Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 23 by the Supreme Court. The controversial verdict ended a pregnant woman’s right to choose to have an abortion.

A petition has been organized by the advocacy group and political action committee MoveOn calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

According to the petition, Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, 74, voted with the majority on overturning Roe v. Wade and plans on overturning rulings that establish same-sex marriage and contraception rights. As a result, some fear this could lead to limited access to contraception and potentially add restrictions to gay marriage.

The MoveOn petition calls for Clarence Thomas to either resign or Congress must immediately investigate and impeach. The petition has been live for at least two months and passed 400,000 signatures.

The petition, live on Sign.MoveOn.org, noted that Thomas was the only one that voted against a Supreme Court decision to approve the release of certain documents involving former President Donald Trump. The records, which Donald Trump, 76, wanted to keep hidden, reportedly details the January 6 insurrection and the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

According to reports, Thomas voted against all of his colleagues when the nation’s highest court voted 8-1 in January that determined,

“Trump could not assert executive privilege over the documents that committee was seeking.”

Even more interest in signing the petition began to develop amongst citizens following Thomas’ wife’s involvement to overturn election results both leading up to January 6 and after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. His wife, Virginia Thomas, is a longtime conservative activist who encouraged former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to continue efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Reportedly, it was recently revealed that Virginia “Ginni” Thomas had corresponded via email with John Eastman, an adviser to former President Donald Trump, who pressured former Vice President Mike Pence to block the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. The petition states:

“Thomas’ failure to recuse himself warrants immediate investigation and heightened alarm. And it’s only the latest in a long history of conflicts of interest in the service of a right-wing agenda and mixing his powerful role with his conservative political activism.”

It added:

“He has shown he cannot be an impartial justice and is more concerned with covering up his wife’s coup attempts than the health of the Supreme Court.”

Thomas is the longest-serving member of the Supreme Court and only one justice has ever been impeached. He is the second African American to serve on the Court and has served since 1991.
