Whoopi Goldberg Shares Update For Upcoming Sequel ‘Sister Act 3’ & Says The 30-Year Wait Was Worth It: It Feels Right

Whoopi Goldberg recently shared her excitement of returning to her beloved “Sister Act” role thirty years since the film’s release.

On Tuesday (July 19), the 66-year-old actress gushed about reprising her role as Deloris Van Cartier, a.k.a. Sister Mary Clarence, during a recent interview. Three decades after the first “Sister Act” film premiered, Whoopi Goldberg opened up about the upcoming sequel and revealed she has been fighting for it to be made. She said:

“I’ve been trying to do this for six years. I was told no one was interested in this. It takes a minute for people to realize they should take their foot out of their mouth.”

Reportedly, Whoopi Goldberg also said the movie is indeed still happening but they haven’t filmed yet. “The View” co-host starred in the 1992 original film “Sister Act” as well as the following year’s sequel “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” and she elaborated on how the timing for the third installment felt right. Whoopi explained:

“It feels right. Because we did Sister Act 1 and 2 back to back, which is why I think they are really great. But now you need some space on it and you need to let [my character] grow up and become an adult, which is what’s happened. We’ll see. She was an adult when she started but she’s much more of an adult now.”

As we previously reported, director Tim Federle shared that Whoopi’s busy schedule seems to be the only thing holding up production of the film series — but it could possibly go into production later this year. Tim Federle said:

“Now it’s just about schedules and chips falling where they may. [Scheduling] is literally everything. It’s literally like the availability of a convent and the availability of an EGOT!”

The first installment, “Sister Act,” is a 1992 comedy film starring Whoopi as a Lounge singer forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program.

The sequel to the film is 1993 musical comedy film “Sister Act: Back in the Habit,” where Whoopi revisits her role as Sister Mary Clarence to teach music to a group of Catholic students whose run-down school is slated for closure.
