Shakira Could Face More Than Eight Years in Prison for Tax Fraud in Spain
Not so good news for Shakira!
According to reports, the Columbian singer is facing more than eight years in prison over multimillion dollar tax fraud. On Wednesday (July 27) Shakira, 45, reportedly rejected a settlement deal offered by Spanish prosecutors in the case of her alleged tax evasion in the amount of $15 million. The “Waka Waka”singer allegedly failed to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014. The prosecutors said they would also seek a fine of 24 million euros ($24 million).

Shakira’s publicist in London said in a statement:
“[Shakira]has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer.”
The publicists also accused the Spanish Tax Agency of violating her rights.
According to reports, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer lived half of each year in Spain with her now ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares two children. However, Shakira listed her primary residence as a private island in the Bahamas, which she co-owns with musician Roger Waters. They reportedly bought it in 2011 with the intent of turning it into a luxury artist retreat, however it looks like the Spanish government believes it was front and was actually a tax shelter.
The singers Spanish public relations team told sources that Shakira has already deposited the amount she is said to owe, including 3 million euros in interest.
A trial date has yet to be set.
