Breonna Taylor’s Family & Boyfriend Appear On ‘Red Table Talk’ To Speak On Her Tragic Death, Loved Ones Reveal They Had To Wait 10 Hours Before Learning What Happened To Taylor

Breonna Taylor’s family and boyfriend are speaking out and recalling the night of her tragic death, giving new details and information surrounding the case.

On a new episode of Red Table Talk  Breonna’s mom Tamika Palmer, her sister Ju’Niyah Palmer and her boyfriend Kenneth “Kenny” Walker join hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield Norris to talk about the events of March 13, 2020, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Breonna Taylor a 26-year-old aspiring nurse who had been working as an EMT– was in her apartment with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shortly after midnight on the night of March 13 when Louisville Metro Police officers charged through her door on a no-knock warrant looking for a suspected drug dealer. Walker, who feared an intruder was breaking in, fired a shot, and in response police fired 32 shots into the apartment, killing Breonna. Her death sparked national outrage and resulted in calls for police defunding/abolishment.

Kenneth Walker was previously charged with assault and attempted murder of a police officer after his gunfire hit Louisville Metro Police Sergeant John Mattingly. However, the charges were later dropped in 2021 after the case brought widespread outrage.

During the latest episode of Red Table Talk, Walker spoke to Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield Norris about the night, offering a minute-by-minute detail of what occurred. Aside from the police officers present, Walker was the only witness to Taylor’s killing.

After Breonna Taylor was shot, Kenneth Walker says he didn’t know it was the police who killed her. He says he heard officers outside yelling for him to come outside. He was afraid that police officers would shoot him when they saw him — but he urgently needed to get Taylor help, so he decided to go outside. He explains,

“The only way for her to possibly even get some help is if I go outside. So either they’re gonna shoot and kill me and then come help her, or they’re gonna talk to me and then come help her. Either way I have to come outside.”

Police footage shows officers yelling at Walker to walk backwards from his home to where officers were stationed. You also see an emotional and frightened Walker crying and asking officers,

“What is this about? We’re both just regular working people!”

Then, while sobbing, he says,

“My girlfriend is dead.”

A white female officer yells back at him and says,

“I don’t give a — keep walking!”

During the interview, Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, reveals that she had to wait 10 hours before finding out what happened to her daughter.

She explains that upon arriving at Breonna’s apartment complex, the street was flooded with police officers. After telling an officer who she was she says,

“this officer tells me that two ambulances went through there and that I needed to go to the hospital, and so I do.”

After nearly two hours, Tamika was told that Breonna was never on record for being taken to the hospital. She says that when she returned to the apartment complex, she saw officers,

“laughing and joking around… Again, I tell them who I am and why I’m there, and so they tell me to hang tight, that a detective would come over and talk to me, which took about 45 minutes to another hour.”

When asked when she found out that her daughter had passed away, Tamika replies,

“It wasn’t until about 11:30 a.m., and mind you we had been out there since 1 a.m… The detective comes back over and says it won’t be much longer that we’ll be able to get in there, and so by this time, I’m pissed, like I’m screaming at him, like, ‘why won’t you tell me where Breonna is? I need to know where Breonna is,’ and he just looks at me and says, ‘Well, ma’am, she’s still in her apartment,’ and so I…I knew what that meant.”

She later learned through a news broadcast that it was the police who shot and killed her daughter. While reflecting on the moment, she tearfully says,

“To leave there, and still not know what happened was insane. The detective gave me a card to call, and I immediately started calling because I couldn’t understand how I was there for over 12 hours and never knew.”

In August, the FBI arrested four current and former Louisville Metro Police Department officers involved in the deadly 2020 raid on Breonna Taylor’s home. The arrested individuals have been charged with civil rights offenses, unlawful conspiracies, unconstitutional use of force, and obstruction offenses.

According to reports, Joshua JaynesKelly Goodlett, and Kyle Meany were charged with submitting a false affidavit to search Breonna Taylor’s home, and then working together to create a
“false cover story in an attempt to escape responsibility for their roles in preparing the warrant affidavit that contained false information.”
In a separate indictment, Brett Hankison is charged with using
“unconstitutionally excessive force during the raid on Ms. Taylor’s home,”
due to firing 10 shots that went into an occupied, neighboring apartment
“without a lawful objective justifying the use of deadly force.”
