Billy Porter Says ‘I Don’t Know Who They Are’ While Addressing If He Could Ever Have A Conversation w/Rappers DaBaby Or Boosie, Who Have Both Made Headlines Over Homophobic Comments: I Had To Extract Myself From That Energy So I Could Save Myself

Billy Porter is opening up about his history with rappers and the Hip-Hop community.

During a recent interview on the ‘Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay‘ podcast, actor Billy Porter was asked if he would ever be open to having a conversation with controversial rappers like DaBaby and Boosie, who have both been known to make homophobic comments. The ‘Pose’ actor explained that he has a complicated history with the Hip-Hop community due to his sexuality.

“I don’t know who they are, and here’s the reason…Hip-Hop came along–my childhood was very traumatizing. I was bullied, I was beaten I was put out of the church all of those things. Hip-Hop started to emerge. The first narrative was ‘f**k the police,’ the second narrative was “kill the fa**ts.’ I missed Hip-Hop, because I had to extract myself from that energy so I could save myself, I don’t know nothing about it. I don’t know who these people are….”

Billy continued,

“I missed a lot of that culture. I’m not proud of it and it was for my own survival. So I don’t know none of these people. I don’t know about Lil Boosie, I don’t know who the f**k that is, just like he don’t know who I am.”

He added,

“When people come for me and talk about me shoving my gayness down their throat, I’m like turn the page. Turn it off, like I did!”

As you may recall, DaBaby made headlines last summer for controversial statements he made regarding HIV during his Rolling Loud performance in July 2021. While on stage he said,

“If you didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that will make you die in 2 [or] 3 weeks put a cellphone light in the air.”

He added,

“Fellas, if you ain’t sucking d*ck in the parking lot put ya cellphone light in the air.”

“Keep it f*cking real!”

Da Baby

Following his set, many people called out the rapper for his unwarranted remarks. DaBaby also faced a few consequences for his actions, including being dropped from multiple music festivals and his clothing line with BoohooMAN. Initially, the ‘BOP’ rapper seemed to stand his ground on what was said but he later offered an apology to the LGBTQ+ community.

Rapper Boosie has previously shared his dislike for Lil Nas X and his open homosexuality in the past. He also called out Lil Nas X after he jokingly told fans he was collaborating with Boosie and a new song was on the way from the two.

Boosie didn’t take the “Old Town Road” star’s joke very lightly and fired back via Twitter. He wrote,

“STOP TROLLING ME F—– LOL!! YOU A WHOLE B**** PLAYING WITH A GANGSTA SMH. YOU CAN KEEP SUCKING D*** AND GETTING F****** IN YOUR A** N PEACE N #uhateyourself I WOULD TOO IF I WERE YOU LOL. NASx IF YOU #commitsuicide YOU WOULD DO THIS WORLD A HUGE FAVOR NOBODY WANTS U HERE.”
