Mariah Carey Reveals She ‘Owns All’ Of Her Master Recordings, Including 86 Singles & 15 Studio Albums

If Mariah Carey has 99 problems, the rights to her musical catalog ain’t one!

The music industry can be a shady place and it’s not uncommon for artists to put their blood, sweat, and tears into music they technically don’t own. However, over the past few years, more musicians have been doing what it takes to get ownership of their songs and musical work. There are also a few artists who managed to secure the rights to their music without needing to jump through the “ownership hoops” their peers have to publically endure, and it seems like Mariah Carey is one of the lucky ones.

Mariah Carey has been in the entertainment business since the late 80s and has accomplished many things after her career was launched.

According to reports, the mother-of-two was the first artist to have their first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In addition, the five-time Grammy winner is one of the best-selling music artists of all time and she’s referred to by many as one of the top singers/songwriters of her generation.

During a recent interview, Mariah Carey revealed that she owns all of her master recordings, including a reported 86 singles and 15 studio albums. While chatting about what actress she’d like to play her in the upcoming small-screen adaptation of her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” she said,

“I’m here to do anything we need to do. I own all my old masters.”

The “Fantasy” singer continued,

“I don’t think it’s about ‘cast the girl who sings the Mariah Carey style’ – whatever that is. It’s about casting a great actress with a somewhat similar look and just making sure the acting is there. Because we have the music – they can sing along to it.”

As previously reported, in 2020 Mariah Carey shared that if her memoir is turned into an on-screen project then she wants to direct it. She said,

“Me, and a secret friend of mine, are talking about [me directing] and what it would look like.”

She continued and noted that people have been in chats with her about hopefully bringing the book to life.

“People have also been reaching out to me about it… people I haven’t heard from in years saying this has to be a series or a movie or whatever it’s going to be. These things take a long time, so it’s going to be what it is, but I believe in it. I’m really looking forward to it even just as a viewer, seeing these stories come to life.”

It looks like Mariah’s getting her dream and the book is being turned into a TV miniseries. However, it’s unclear if she’ll direct. Recent reports claim the miniseries will be crafted by her good friend Lee Daniels, who previously directed her in his dramas “The Butler” and “Precious.”
