Céline Dion Reveals Diagnosis of Rare, Incurable Stiff Person Syndrome, Singer Postpones World Tour

Celine Dion’s health has affected the dates of her world tour.

In an emotional video shared via Instagram on Thursday (Dec. 8), Celine Dion was candid about the difficult challenges she’s faced during her health battle. The singer announced that she’s been diagnosed with a neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome, which has been causing her to have severe muscle spasms. Celine Dion explained:

“The spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”

According to reports, Stiff Person Syndrome, which affects one in a million people, is a disease that causes “progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms” that are triggered by sudden movement, cold temperatures, or unexpected loud noises.

The “I’m Alive” artist added:

“I have to admit it’s been a struggle. All I know is singing, it’s what I’ve done all my life.”

The 54-year-old also shared disappointing news relating to her upcoming tour. The diagnosis means the Europe portion of the world tour, set for February, has been postponed until 2024, and the scheduled summer shows have been canceled. The French-Canadian entertainer added:

“I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better. I’m working with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again.”

Back in January, Dion canceled the North American portion of her “Courage World Tour,” due to “severe and persistent muscle spasms.” The tour was initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The mother of three also canceled her Las Vegas residency in October 2021 after she said the spasms were affecting her rehearsals.
