Brittney Griner Cut Signature Locs Due To Freezing Russian Prison Temperatures
Brittney Griner cut off her signature locs while locked up in a Russian prison.
According to Griner’s attorney, the decision was made due to Russian prison temperatures, which were causing brutal hair freezing.
Brittney Griner’s attorney, Maria Blagovolina, told ESPN on Thursday (Dec. 8) that the 32-year-old got the haircut two weeks ago after her hair kept freezing following prison showers. Blagovolina said instead of dealing with the issue for an entire Russian winter, Griner made the choice to chop it all off.
Blagovolina said,
“It’s very cold in there and every time she washed her hair she got cold and would get a chill. She should have waited until New Year’s Day.”
WNBA star Brittney Griner was released from a Russian prison on Thursday (Dec. 8) in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout. The swap reportedly took place in the United Arab Emirates. The one-for-one exchange agreement negotiated with Moscow in recent weeks was given final approval by President Biden within just the last week, according to sources familiar with the deal.
President Biden also held a press conference Thursday (Dec. 8) with Brittney Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, and Vice President Harris by his side. In part, he said,
“She’s safe. She’s on a plane. She’s on her way home. After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones and she should have been there all along.”
Thank you Mr President for making this happen.

As previously reported, Griner was wrongfully detained in Russia in February. The Olympic gold medal winner was arrested after Russian authorities allegedly found vape cartridges while searching her luggage at a Moscow airport. Reportedly, the cartridges contained oil derived from cannabis. She was ultimately sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison.
Griner is now officially on U.S. soil.
U.S. official John Kirby said Friday (Dec. 9) after Griner touched down in San Antonio that she’s in “very, very good spirits” and “appeared to be, obviously, in good health.”
